Why some have to get fired to become a successful real-estate investor

Tough times like these bring immense challenges and many sleepless nights. They are also the perfect breeding ground for thriving new business ventures.

Take my business partner, Barbara Heil-Sonneck and me for example. Years ago both of us were tired of our careers, long ready for a change, but still not daring to jump into new ventures. Then circumstances changed, we finally just had to let go, and gave up what had felt safe for many years. At the same time fate provided us with the tools we needed to start over. We attended our first real-estate investor seminar, a two-day intensive training course conducted by Atlanta radio host and local real-estate investor legend John Adams. One thing led to another and before we knew it we owned a stock of rental houses, I became a partner in warehouse conversion developments and Barbara started to coach other, mostly female investors on their first deals.

Interestingly enough, our story resonated in many stories we heard from other women. Divorce, financial pressures, job losses, or simply an empty-nest situation, it almost seemed that many got somehow magically kicked into this business to escape other pressures. Male investors also get started that way. Robert Kiyosaki did, to my knowledge, as did Ron LeGrand, to name just a couple. But it seems that women find it especially hard to let go and take risks. Our naturally strong need for security seems to make it harder for us to jump into the unknown, which is where a high dose of testosterone might actually come in handy.

How about you? Did you get your first investment property handed on a silver platter? Or did you stumble onto it by accident? Did you always think about investing, but never dared to until you got “the boot”?
As an author my research never stops. I’d like to hear from you. And I am sure your comment will help encourage others – men and women - especially in times like this.

After almost two decades in international marketing and journalism S.A. Philipp changed her focus to developing a passive-income real-estate investing business. She's worked it from the ground up, getting her hands dirty doing her own rehab work, all the way to the truly passive investment as in warehouse conversion and mixed-use development with trusted partners.
